Mcalester Oklahoma Food
A McAlester has been gathering for the past two years at its third annual Oklahoma Food Festival. The festival has attracted thousands of visitors from across the state, as well as as as far away as New York and California.
The town of Krebs, now known as "Oklahoma's Little Italy," began as a small coal mining camp in the 1870s. At that time, many Italians, especially from Italy and Italy, were recruited to work in the mines of Indian territory. With nearly half the population being Italian and American, it was no surprise when Italian restaurants appeared in Krems and the neighboring town of McAlester.
After serving in the US Navy Dom returned to his hometown and realized his dream in 1950 with the opening of the island of Capri. Italian immigrant Pete Piegari, who came to America in 1903, founded the popular restaurant. He served his colleagues at home and soon began serving food to the hungry workers on the side. In the 1980s, the restaurant moved to its current location in McAlester, where the Prichard family continued its legacy of bringing delicious food to the masses.
The decor is clearly a - a - kind, while the food is similar to that in the other restaurants of the Krebs family. To make money, Pete started brewing what he called "The Choctaw" at home, a name derived from the ChoCTaw Indians in the area.
Opened in 1959, everything is original, from lighting to ceiling tiles and everything in between. Since the restaurant opened in the hands of the Krebs family, five generations have moved into the restaurant. Lovera's is located in an old brick building on the corner of Main Street and Main Avenue and has been a culinary destination since 1946, when it was opened by Mike Lovera.
One of six children of coal mining father Krebs, Dominic Anthony Giacomo spent his youth washing dishes in a neighbouring town's restaurant and dreamed of one day owning his own. At the tender age of 11 Pete started working in a coal mine in the area, staying until he reached a cave - where he crushed his legs and could not work. In memory of this cunning businessman Dom had the restaurant built to look and function like a real house, just in case the business went under.
Founded in 1925, Pete's Place is known for its grilled Italian sausages, hot dogs, burgers, ribs and grilled burgers. Giacomo also served the popular prawn and Florentine chicken scampi at the original location, as well as a variety of other popular dishes.
